Years ago, I took a class with a small group of women about self-empowerment, helping yourself to find strength, teaching your younger self (who whispers to you a lot) to feel safe and secure… In that class, we talked about creating your own personal bubble in this world to protect you from energy you didn’t need to feel.
Woo, yes. Helpful, yes. Forgotten, yes.
Here’s my reminder:
Redevelop your bubble… make it as dense or as permeable as desired. Find ways to adjust it in a moment’s notice. Keep it clear with a 20/20 corrective lens all around so you are never blindsided. Have it be both breathable and protected from hot air blown with any level of smoke. There are ways to adjust its weight, too. It can ground you or help you fly.
You can create and extinguish with a quick flick, as needs arise in either direction. It protects you, but you maintain control.
Practice this control. Start with the bubble tight and dense, leave little opportunity for empathic energy to sneak in. Once centered on your own current energy, let the bubble slide out, embracing a little more of yester-you, encompassing whatever you-morrow becomes.
No matter how dense the surface might be, it will not negate your ability to be compassionate. It will, however, allow you to forgo carrying someone else’s emotional burden.
When you are calm and stable, the bubble can be opened up. You can hold space for someone else within it. You can provide comfort and calm to those in need, inviting them in, sharing the weight of what they may be facing.
But that means there are no emotional impositions. There will be strains. There may be expectations and implied obligations. But each heft will be chosen, with energy and needs balanced according to a prioritization you set.
Given my current energy and the numerous outside needs, I can’t lift them all. I can barely lift my head.
I’m directing my energy to the bubble. I’m not apologizing for it.
